At this point, there is no denying Facebook’s presence and influence on the internet. But how do you take full advantage of this as a small business or non-profit? In order to really take advantage of this free communication channel you need to start things off right.
1. Create a Facebook Page (NOT A PROFILE OR GROUP!)
Pages are designed for businesses and allow your customers ( fans ) to interact with your business in unique ways. There are differences between profiles, groups and pages. It is a common mistake to create a separate Facebook profile or group for your company. You should know Facebook has strict policies relating to profiles being strictly for real people not businesses and can delete profiles that violate those policies.
So if you have a group or profile for your business you should definitely create a page and notify everyone you are moving to the page. It’s better to do it now than later.
If you don’t have a page you can easily create one by going to https://www.facebook.com/pages/create
2. Fill out all your company details
It’s so important to fill out all your details because it makes it easier for people to find you. Especially since Facebook gives preference to local pages when users search.
Make sure at least these fields are filled in:
- Website Address
- Description, category and other about information
3. Set a profile picture.
Try to use your business logo to make your brand easily identifiable.
- Make sure it’s a square. If it’s not Facebook will only show part of the image.
- The minimum size for your photo is 180 by 180 pixels. Be sure your picture looks good, nothing is worse than a stretched or pixelated Facebook profile.
4. Set a cover photo.
Remember this photo is one of the first things people see on your page so make sure it looks great.
- Avoid too much text. Facebook has a policy limiting the text on your cover photo.
- Cover photos are 851 pixels wide and 315 pixels tall so try the photo you upload has those dimensions.
5. Put some content on your page.
Leave a status update. Better yet, leave a status update with a photo. Facebook users pay more attention when there is a photo.
